Charity Navigator evaluates organizations and can help you recognize the good ones. They have over 3,200 charities in their database. Enter the name of your charity in the Keyword Search section and then check the ratings. Four stars is exceptional, one star is poor.
Do some investigating. Check in with watchdogs such as BBB Wise Giving Alliance from the Better Business Bureau to be sure your hard earned dollars are reaching those in need. You'll start at the National Charity Report Index where there is an alphabetical listing of the charities. Find your charity, then look through the report to discover how they distribute the funds that they raise.
